Praying Through the Lord’s Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer

Welcome to an in depth exploration of The Lord’s Prayer. In many ways Jesus was not merely teaching a set of words we are to routinely pray over and over again but more an approach to prayer. What’s so powerful about The Lord’s Prayer is how it aligns our hearts with what is true and grounds us in reality. So often we can get sidetracked when praying or find ourselves praying about things that are not the most important. This prayer brings us back to what is truly most crucial for us to pray. What I did was break down this prayer into steps so you could take some time to pray through this.

1) Focus upon the Lord Jesus Christ

It is Jesus’ work on Calvary that gives a person their new identity and standing before God. Jesus makes it possible for us to come to God in Confidence. Take a few moments to reflect on His greatness and that He is present in this place.

2) Our Father, which art in Heaven, hallowed be Your name

Begin to praise and hallow God the Father for who He is, what He is like, and the things He does

3) May your kingdom come, may your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven

Pray that God establish His Kingdom work and will. You, the believer, must say, “Yes” to what God is doing and wants to do in and through your life. That includes the act of surrender to His sovereign work, even through a wilderness or desert experience. Take time to pray for God’s will to be done.

4) Give us this day our daily bread

Pray to God regarding your daily needs. Jesus and Paul both taught about living life one day at a time. This is a time for prayer about the Lord meeting your needs of food, finances, and health. You can pray about the church’s needs as well. It is also clear that there is more that you need from him than just physical needs: you need Him to be your peace, to be your joy, to work and develop His fruit in your life. You need Him moment-by-moment, day by day, hour by hour. You can also pray for others’ needs here, as well.

5) And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us

Reflect upon the broken and destructive mindsets and choices in your life. Forgiveness in the Bible, for you as a believer, is about more than revealing something hidden. It is acknowledging the truth to God and you. Acknowledge before the Lord the destructive sin in your behaviors, in your thoughts and acknowledge your need for His forgiveness and cleansing. Then think upon someone you may need to forgive. In this case, forgiveness is not to seek revenge you deserve, or think you deserve, but rather to wish the blessings of God upon them.

6) And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one

Take Ephesians Chapter 6 and pray through the Armor of God.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

Consider the armor and then ask for the Lord to clothe you in this armor. Ask for the Lord’s cleansing and strength.

7) For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Close the prayer remembering He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
