Pastor Ryan’s 10 Favorite Books on Prayer

Here is a list of the 10 most influential and powerful books I’ve read on prayer. I included some comments on each book along with the Amazon link.

1. Moving Mountains by John Eldredge

This is a profound book on not just how to pray but how we are to look at prayer. John uses a very accessible way of writing and has at the back of the book a very powerful “daily prayer” you can use in your own life.

2) Whisper by Mark Batterson

What makes this book powerful is that it looks at the ways God speaks to us. When we know this we are more likely to hear Him in these arenas. This book deeply challenges the assumption that God wants to speak to us today. Actually, all the books I list here do… Hahaha!

3) Hearing God by Dallas Willard

This book is a brain full! Seriously. Anything Willard writes is deeply thoughtful and can be a bit of work to get through. I’m just being honest here. BUT- if you are willing to really do the work.. oh boy, there’s some real gold here.

4) Prayer: Finding The Heart’s True Home by Richard Foster

This book is a modern classic on the subject of prayer!

5) Practicing His Presence by Brother Lawrence and Frank Laubach

This is a tiny book that has DEEPLY influenced my thinking on prayer. It’s a mash-up of two different books. IT IS WELL WORTH YOUR TIME!

6) The PAPA Prayer by Larry Crabb

This is a great book on a really powerful approach to prayer. I gave you a synopsis of it in one of the articles on our prayer resources page but if you wish to go deeper, this book is where to go!

7) Sacred Rhythms by Ruth Haley Barton

This book is about spiritual transformation and disciplines. Prayer in one chapter in this book, but it is a very good and profound chapter. The whole book is a great read!

8) Daily Office by Peter Scazzero

This is a short little book on praying at intentional times during the day to help you practice God’s presence. He also has some wonderful thoughts on prayer.

9) Prayer is Invading the Impossible by Jack Hayford.

A dear friend of mine gave me this book years ago. It is full of really amazing teaching on prayer! It’s also very short but don’t let its size fool you- this is a seriously power book on prayer!

10) How to Pray by RA Torrey

This is the oldest book on the list, written by a man who’s thinking has profoundly influenced me and the college I come from, BIOLA University. RA Torrey was a deep lover and friend of God- a biblical scholar, theologian, and spirit-filled minister. He was a man of deep prayer, and thus arrived at some very deep wisdom. This book has a lot to teach!

There you have it! There are tons of books out there but each of these books has a lots to share and are pretty easily read-able. I invite you to pick up a book on this list, read it, and then apply what you learn to your life of prayer. You will be blessed!!! If you’re not a reader, please keep in mind that some of these books can be listened to audibly. It’s worth your time! Give them a shot!
