OUR STORY

Serving the Sunland-Tujunga Community Since 1954

Sunland Neighborhood Church began as an independent non-denominational church on February 4, 1954 and became affiliated with the Evangelical Free Church of America in 1963. An Evangelical Free Church in La Crescenta sold their property and merged with Sunland Neighborhood Church, and a group from North Hollywood Evangelical Free Church also joined us in support and ministry in 1990.

The building and the plan for the current campus were the vision of founding pastor Paul Kennedy. He was there to supervise all the building and then later returned to oversee the construction of our last project, which was the second floor of the Education building, which provided additional classrooms.

As the name implies, ours is an “evangelical” church. We emphasize the authority of Scripture and hold that salvation is from faith and grace alone, as opposed to good works and sacraments. We are also a “free” church in that the congregation, and congregation alone, determines the destiny of the church. The church leadership, though vested with the authority to direct the course of the congregation, receives that authority from the congregation and works autonomously from the greater denomination.

Staement of Faith

Our Vision, Our Mission, Our Calling

Know & Live & Share the Gospel

Our mission at Sunland Neighborhood Church is to be a light in our community, sharing the gospel with our neighbors through our actions, which speak much louder than our words can. We strive to walk by faith and let our lives reflect the life of Christ, both inside the church and out in the world.

What We Believe

Statement of Faith

  1.  We believe the Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, to be the inspired Word of God without error in the original writings, the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of men, and the Divine and final authority for all Christian faith and life. Psalm 19:7-11; 2 Timothy 3:16, 17; 2 Peter 1:19-21.

  2.  We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect, and eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Isaiah 44:6; Romans 11:33-36; Matthew 28:19.

  3.  We believe that Jesus Christ is true God and true man, having been conceived of the Holy Ghost and born of the Virgin Mary.  He died on the cross, a sacrifice for our sins, according to the Scriptures.  Further, He arose bodily from the dead, ascended into Heaven, where, at the right hand of the Majesty on High, He now is our High Priest and Advocate.  John 1:1-4; Luke 1:35; Philippians 2:5-11; 1 Timothy 2:5, 6; Acts 1:9-11; John 14:6.

  4.  We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and during this age to convince men of sin, regenerate the believing sinner, indwell, guide, instruct, and empower the believer for godly living and service.  John 14:16, 17, 2616:7-14; 1 Corinthians 6:19; Ephesians 4:30, 5:18.

  5.  We believe that man was created in the image of God but fell into sin and is, therefore lost, and only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can salvation and spiritual life be obtained.  Genesis 1:26, 27; Romans 3:23, 5:12-19; John 3:3-5.

  6.  We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only ground for the justification and salvation for all who believe, and that only such as receive Jesus Christ, by faith, are born of the Holy Spirit, and thus become the children of God. Ephesians 2:8, 9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:18, 19; John 3:16-18; Acts 4:12; Romans 8:1.

  7.  We believe that water baptism and the Lord's Supper are ordinances to be observed by the church during this present age.  They are, however, not to be regarded as a means of salvation. Acts 22:16; Hebrews 10:22; John 3:5; Titus 3:5; Romans 6:3-6; Galatians 3:26, 27.

  8.  We believe that the true church is composed of all such persons, who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit and are united together in the body of Christ of which He is the Head. Matthew 16:18; Ephesians 1:22, 23; Hebrews 12:23; 1 Timothy 3:15; 1 Corinthians 12:12-27; Colossians 1:18.

  9.  We believe that only those who are members of the true church shall be eligible for membership in the local church. Ephesians 1:23, 4:16; Colossians 1:18

  10.  We believe that Jesus Christ is the Lord and Head of the Church, and that every local church has the right under Christ to govern its own affairs.  Acts 15:19-31, 20:28; 1 Peter 5:1-4.

  11.  We believe in the personal, pre-millennial and imminent return of our Lord Jesus Christ, and that this "Blessed Hope" has a vital bearing on the personal life and service of the believer.  Acts 1:11; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 2 Peter 3:10-14; 1 John 3:2, 3.

  12.  We believe in the bodily resurrection of all the dead; of the believer to everlasting blessedness and joy with the Lord, and of the unbeliever to everlasting conscious punishment. 1 Corinthians 15:12-57; Revelation 20:5, 6, 11-15; Matthew 25:46; Daniel 12:2.
